Mate, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the short stuff...
The stumps are only 28 inches tall, so the short stuff can't bowl you.
If you try to pull or hook, when it's not in your natural game, you'll get out to it - almost without fail.
You're better off scoring off the shots you can play, & working the short ball behind square (on either side) with soft hands when the line/length permit it.

I once spent 3 hours at the crease trying to save an innings that had started collapsing (18/6!). I was determined not to play the hook or pull shots, given that they're not a part of my regular arsenal... however, after about 2 hours, from seemingly nowhere came two of the best hook shots I've ever hit. And to this day I have no where they came from.
The point is that if you spend long enough at the crease, just playing YOUR shots, somewhere along the line your natural instincts will kick in, & your vocabulary of shots evolves & grows.
