Default Stalwart Simmons handed ECB role

Lancashire chairman Jack Simmons has been named England and Wales Cricket Board chairman of cricket.

The 66-year-old enjoyed a 20-year career with Lancashire and Tasmania and was affectionately known as "Flat-Jack" for his unique off-break bowling style.

Simmons secured 12 of the votes from 18 First-Class Counties and the MCC and succeeds Dennis Amiss, who has moved to the deputy chairman role at the ECB.

Durham chairman Clive Leach was second in the vote with seven nominations.

Simmons was part of the Lancashire side which won the Gillette Cup for three years in succession in the early 1970s and has been chairman at the county since 1998.
