The emotional tug-of-war between love and lust has long inspired novels and films, including Doris Lessing’s novel The Grandmothers.

The Hobbit led the pack with the most nominations at nine, and Life of Pi and Skyfall came in right behind it, with eight and even, respectively. According to The Hollywood Reporter the date and location for the awards will be announced in the coming weeks. For the full list of nominees, you After months and months of hearing how outstanding it was, I read John Green's The Fault In Our Stars while on a beach vacation over Christmas, actively choosing to put myself through heartbreak while I was supposed to be relaxing. Hell, it was worth it-- The Fault In Our Stars, technically a young adult novel but so much better than any label could suggest, is one of the best books I've read in years, the kind of thing that makes you want to shake your friends and say "We will to understand each other until you read this."

With a movie adaptation now in the works, there will surely be many more of us fighting to get people to read the book before seeing the movie. Not that the film version doesn't look promising, though-- in fact, with director Josh Boone now set to direct, it's clear it's in the hands of someone who loves it as much as I do. Talking to THR about the news he had been hired, Boone explained that he read the book just after the death of a close friend: “John's book came along just when I needed it. It pierced my heart and helped me deal with my grief. I laughed and cried and was left with an overwhelming feeling of hope. That our lives matter, that the love and kindness we share with others reverberates long after we're gone. I feel the weight and responsibility to get this right and give his readers and devoted fans as pure a translation as possible … We hope to create a little infinity within this film that fans can revisit over and over."

Honestly, that line about the little infinity, which is a reference to the book? It has me tearing up all over again. It's that kind of book, you guys. With Boone now set we can hopefully expect some casting news soon, particularly for the leads roles of Hazel and Augustus, the two teenagers who meet in a cancer support group and fall for each other (it's way less sappy than that sounds, I promise). Word broke not long ago that Shailene Woodley could play Hazel, fresh off her acclaimed role in the Sundance teen romance The Spectacular Now. Now THR's Borys Kit has added in a tweet that True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld was also in the mix. Either would be great, but I"m especially curious about who will play the charismatic, funny and deeply romantic Augustus, a tough thing for a teenager to pull off for sure. Hey, Nat Wolff was in Boone's directorial debut Stuck In Love and is pretty great in the upcoming Admission… if he gets the part, you heard it here first.

Little Hailee Steinfeld broke through big in 2010 playing a young girl with an incredible will in the Coen Brothers' True Grit. Her turn as the fiery and tenacious Mattie Ross scored her an Academy Award nod at 14, and since then she's lined up a string of tantalizing projects including John Carney's musical drama Can a Song Save Your Life?, a take on Romeo and Juliet penned by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, and the much-anticipated adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. While that trio of pics is set to hit in 2013, the teen leading lady is poised for a new project that will take her back to the South and into the heart of the Civil War.

Keeping Room is a drama written by Julia Hart that centers on three Southern women—two sisters and a slave—who must protect their home against a band of Union soldiers who have broken from their ranks. THR reports Harry Brown helmer Daniel Barber will direct, and Steinfeld will co-star with Olivia Wilde and Nicole Beharie, who dazzled critics last fall in her stand-out performance opposite Michael Fassbender in Steve McQueen's bleak drama Shame. Obviously, Steinfeld and Wilde will play the sisters, while Beharie will play the slave, but it seems the narrative will be shouldered by all three. The film is currently seeking foreign buyers at the American Film Market; principal photography is slated to start in North Carolina this March.

With Steinfeld more or less back in the setting of True Grit, it'll be especially interesting to see how her skills as an actress have developed. Wilde is always mesmerizing onscreen, but her movie roles have generally proved less demanding than her work on television. This could be a great chance for her to put her drama chops to use on the big screen. As for Beharie, she really was incredible even in her brief role in Shame-- as the woman with whom Michael Fassbender's sex addict Brandon attempts an actual date-- and it's a relief to see her finally getting some traction from it. Together, this is a strong ensemble that could make Keeping Room a charged Civil War drama.

Experience the Croods’ beautifully strange and dangerous journey into the unknown when it hits theaters on March 22, 2013. If you believe the buzz from last night, Christoph Waltz hosted the best SNL of the entire season-- a pretty amazing accomplishment even for someone who already has an oscar and who's nominated for another one. And even though Django Unchained has been in theaters for month, one of the best sketches of the night was a parody of Django as well as Inglourious Basterds, including a perfect Brad Pitt-as-Aldo-Raine impression from Taran Killam. But the highlight, obviously, was Waltz's performance as Jesus-- oh, excuse me, Djesus.
For its cinematic adaptation, screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons, A Dangerous Method) and director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel, Nathalie…) had their work cut out for them, and they appear to have cut out a bit of the story in their process. Vlicious! has the first trailer for the Australian drama, which is now titled Two Mothers, which should give you some clue as to what kind of cuts were made. Naomi Watts and Robin Wright play lifelong best friends and neighbors whose relationships with each other’s sons turns sexual. Those sons are played James Frenchville , who was quite impressive in David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom, and Xavier Samuel, whom horror fans will know from his insane performance in another Australian film, Sean Byrne’s The Loved Ones. The film seems to have completely erased the sons’ marriages and families from the novel, which focuses all of the drama solely between the four of them. Note that the trailer below doesn’t censor its language, so save it for later if F-bombs aren’t safe for work. There are films I’ve no desire to see that produce trailers that at least make me understand why some people would want to see them. Here though, the provocative material that I’m interested in seeing has been muted and turned into a soap opera about pretty people in sunlight and bed sheets. The intriguing moments are surrounded by the kind of stereotypical things that a viewer plays out in their head as soon as they read the plot synopsis, but maybe Fontaine is saving all the explosive moments for the theaters. We’ll have to wait and see when the film gets released later this summer.
"The H is silent." I can't imagine how much fun the SNL writers had picking up lines from both Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds and somehow working this into a story about Jesus. For all I know it started with the idea of the pull quote "Less violent than The Passion of the Christ" and went from there. With Quentin Tarantino still out there taking about making a trilogy of revisionist historical revenge films, he might now have an idea for how to make the life and death of Christ a whole lot more, well, badass.
