There are days in cricket where by luck fast bowlers of a particular team makes impact in cricket. So i think pakistan had their most successful years of fast bowling in 1992-1994, west indies 1984, england 1998, australia 1980, south africa 1995 and finally new zealand is the only country nowdays in cricket who somehow tries fastbowling (without swing)!

Some days ago i was viewing a australian domestic cricket match. In that match there was a camera view from the umpires' hat. Through it cricket playing looked very funny. In that match the batsmen after playing a stroke went for a run and took just eight to ten walkable steps not even big strides nor a jog. But still they comfortably reached the other side for a run! So whats the length of the pitch, is it just 15 walkable steps?
But here in india in coaching clubs its 22 walkable steps!
Or is cricket in international just acting? On a short pitch the bowlers just bowl slow seamers and tweaks. And batsmen take short runs? The run-up might be long even the ground too seems big. But the pitch really seems a cheat! Or is it for children entertainment matches!?
A short pitch would...
1) allow batsmen to twist their trunks and hit easy sixes!
2) allow spinners to get more grip out of the pitch!
3) allow a good bouce carry for seamers every delivery they bowl! If the pitch would had been long then there won't had been good carry after pitching!
4) allow the batsmen to take more singles without exhaustion!
5) thereby lengthening the match entertainment!
6) allow midget batsmen to make a career!
7) allow the nearby catches as in a kindergarten cricket game!
I had myself measured 22yards on a ground and its 26 to 30 walkable steps. And bowling on a 22yard pitch is extremely difficult. I think the pitches of john snow times might had been longer, so the ball took much flight time to reach the other end. And donald bradman scored so many runs at an average of 99! Since there were no spinners to bowl on a long pitch. And bowling side then fielded four seamers and two mediums against donald bradman. If one watches the matches after 1980s, mostly the pitches seem very very small! The loose arm ball takes just milli seconds to reach the other end after bowling! By securing wicket with quick eye hand co-ordination the batsmen play with ease.
What if ambrose and co and others too are brought to bowl on a 22 yard pitch. And if many west indies, pakistan, australian seamers bowling went dead after pitching???

So i was thinking, on a 15 walkable cricket pitch how can waqar younis perfect his reverse swings!!!
On a short pitch the ball bowled even if swinged would eventually go straight towards the stump. But waqar younis is like a magician. He deceives the batsmen eyes and techniques.
The 1990s english cricket team on paperwork records were a powerfull batting side, but when they came to the field they played somewhat loose cricket. Waqar younis bowling quick bowled graeme hick several times with reverse swing yorkers in test matches 1991-1993. Those wickets reveal that the ball takes much time to reach the other end on lord pitches. What i guess is the ball might had lost its natural swing and in the last phases tends to loose direction by swinging inwards to the leg stump. Or it might be a outswing bowled inwards which perfects its lethalness and after pitching turns offbreak.
Waqar younis in 1997-1998 season too had tried bowling reverse swings against sri lankan batsmen successfully.
Another reverse swing bowler is darren gough.

Its been years watching cricket, i wonder why no indian fast bowler ever tries bowling bouncers to australian batsmen on bouncy australian pitches???
The indian bowlers from 1980s to 2012 bowl the same medium pace bowling. The fastest indian bowlers of 1996 had GH, steroids, sports enhancing drugs, adrenalin enhancers, even the best sporty bouncy pitches and soft ball at hand. But the occassional bouncers some went 2metres away from left handed aussie batsmen and 2.5metres offtarget from right handed aussie batsmen. Some even went straight bounce and were caught overhead by wicketkeeper.
What if bret lee is a recreation of a yester year (black and white era) fastest bowler!
The indian fast bowlers of 1996-1999 they bowled good length and it was drived n' squared for fours. Yorkers turned to leg side fours. So what they did was to pitch the ball in the middle of the pitch and try bowling wayward or shocking the batsmen. Many aussie batsmen then mishit or stroke a pull towards deep mid-wicket for four! So then it seems that the sydney/melbourne pitches are way too long!
But then bret lee in the just concluded matches against sri lanka took just micro seconds to reach the other end.
Such is the pity of fast bowlers that rarely any non australian bowler takes wicket on australian pitches. Sri lanka, india, zimbabwe and even pakistan. Only wasim akram and west indians, new zealanders, brits, SAs used to bowl bouncers to aussie batsmen!
At another instance bret lee breaked the helmet of t.dilshan. How can a soft ball break a helmet? Was the helmet made of plastic?
The aussie athletes are not that huge as they seem! If the average height of indian cricket players is 5 feet. The aussies are just 8 inches more. Their health is also not big. They are just like any other human being but just their dimensions make preassumption to the eyes that they are healthier huge! Most of their players like ian harvey, ricky ponting, michael slator, justin langer....etc are just 5feet 5inches!

Though indian fast medium bowling has changed a lot since ages into the modern era. I think that the typical standard indian bowling action is of yester years indian bowlers....roger binny, madan lal, yashpal sharma and also chetan sharma. Pitching looping the new ball on the up and let the pitch swing do the rest. And also leg and off cutters!

Many fast bowlers bowl throw/chuck bowling in their careers, but some are not able to get wickets even by chucking.
The throw chuck was then perfectly bowled by malcolm marshall. He just used to run-up five to six steps and rotate his bowling arm much vigourously than normal. But from the side angle it seemed that malcolm marshall bowling arm was straight!
Malcolm marshall bowled bouncers to hit many backs, shoulders and helmets mostly english batsmen nightmare. Bowling practising chucking throwing instead of conventional bowling. So cause of too much intensity malcolm marshall died of heart attack at the age of 40. From the side angle the chuck bowling of malcolm marshall looked like intense hammering pitching ricochet bodyline.

There are some one day matches in which it seemed that bret lee had increased his height to 6feet 5inches by performance drugs. He then increased his sports performance like hoping run-up rather than a normal 12-15 jog run-up, bret lee took just 6 to 7 hops and a big leap from behind the umpire towards the crease.
If one study denise lillee bowling he too took big strides and at the crease outstretched his left leg like side splits. He bowled his bumper/bouncer like a offspin bend wrist!
These techniques/performances can never be imitated copied.
I think sometimes on a good bouncy pitch andrew caddick seemed quicker like allan donald!!! With a very fast run-up and action it seemed andrew caddick bowled leg-cutters. But in slow motion replays it revealed fast out swingers. Some yorkers took the stumps cartwheeled to a far distance.
His career record...in 62 tests 234 wickets and 54 ODIs 69 wickets!!!
Though the batsmen who had faced him might be knowing how fast and difficult to bat against andrew caddick is!!!
In my school days i liked to beat the batsmen with outswings but unlike andrew caddick who never imparts revolutions to the seam of the ball but still gets better cool outswing than glen mcgrath, i bowled outswing by giving tipsy topsy revolutions. Pitched at full length and the batsman should think it'll come straight or inswing. Puts front foot or even cross back foot but the ball outswing should hit the offstump like magic ball. In my school matches everyone used to laugh at my run-up and in one match i had taken 4 or maybe 5 wickets. That was a much memorable day for me like as if i was doing 'balle balle' dance. But later in matches many of my deliveries had lost power after pitching. If a bowler aims for swing his speed depreciates. But as a 15 year old i think i had much better action speed at that time.
After spending months in coaching clubs it seems to me after so much deliberate brain-washing i had lost my natural bowling and trying to copy speeds of bret lee n' shoiab akhtar, i bowled ineffective.. Nowdays if many of you still never understand outswing, then you might remember shane warne's ashes bowleds indipper legbreak!!!
I still sometimes forget all that i had learnt in coaching club cricket and try to regain my old youth self to bowl that outswing, but the ball after pitching goes straight!!!
Living bowling in indian atmosphere makes a anil kumble type bowler.
The outswinger that i knew in my childhood days is like the snarling palm of a venom spitting cobra. Such bowling is somewhat bowled by wasim akram, naved rana, aquib javed and ata-ur-rehman.
The ball after hitting the stumps still revolves like a top!
As i recall that i used to practise a lot with bend elbow throw to get the outswing angle right. Sometimes i think muthiah muralitharan who used elbow flexion to get the extra edge in offspin but blamed for chucking, then i think even shane warne was sometimes using elbow flexion rather than straight elbow to get perfect leggie. So is shane warne a chucker throw bowler?

Allan Donald hostile spell to the Waugh brothers, 2nd test SCG 1997/98 - YouTube

Here is a finest bowling display of allan donald.
In the recent ongoing IPL, the foreign fast bowlers seem bowling each and every ball banging on the pitch. The camera view from behind the batsman shows that it takes mili seconds for the ball to reach the other end. But still some half volleys are hit for a six. Allan donald if were playing in IPL then he would had seem bowling with fitness energy in the ball even with a short run-up! The batsman facing allan donald's pace gets a high impact at the bat, and they never need any backlift nor a stroke! Just placement angle of the bat and the ball in blink reaches the boundary! Very complex bowling action seam bowling.

Zaheer khan is from a indian team of 1999 which was a comedian cricket team. Zaheer khan's performance is very loose and his run-up is like slow motion. Ipl cricket nowdays seem to have corrected the comedian image of indian entertainment to serious one. If i recall indian cricket from 1990 to 2004 was a comedian paradise. Ipl cricket is like a short term version of ODI for entertainment, just the beginning and the end overs for excitement. Its like a bitter dumb charades!
Indian fast medium bowlers tend to sway sideways and exersion makes their lower backs to stiffened under pressure. So they and even sri lankans, pakistanis tend to bowl side on bowling.
But allan donald like foreigner bowlers tend to get a high flying action at the crease front on.
PL Taylor Clean bowled by Allan Donald- Aus vs SA WC 1992 - YouTube
Allan donald had slowed down his original youth agility speed in and after years 1996. But here in this video of 1992 when he had debuted we can see imagine what the batsmen would had confronted upon!
Superhuman athletism!
So allan donald undoubtedly becomes the no.1 contender for the fastest bowler on earth(if overall performance not considered) better than bret lee, shoiab akhtar or any other who claims better!

Cricket Classic - India vs SA Hero Cup Semi Final 1993 HD - Short Highlights - YouTube

Here is a yester years classic comedy match of hero cup between sa Vs india.
In this match allan donald is bowling at his full potential.
But in some deliveries it seems that allan donald and f.de villiers bowl a loop ball trying short of length. And they have some magic technique in their palms that even the slower bowled ball after pitching gains energy and flies off towards wicket-keeper's head high. The indian batsmen are seen not playing complete strokes due to fraction of seconds time but flicking the ball.
The dismissals of kapil dev and hansie cronje are also funny!

You mention denise lillee and he reminds me of jason gillespie. So denise lillee can't be considered a brilliant fast bowler. He might had surprised many in his days, but due to changing times and innovations, the latter bowlers seem improved than him.
Jason gillespie as i had seen his career bowled slower bowling and swinged only the new ball. Tried for lbw, edge catches and fast yorkers just like his predessesor denise lillee. Even the offcutters but not the leg cutters.
Denise lillee i think used palm power kia bowling. Used to try hitting the batsmen pads hard for making their footwork uncertain. Only on some occassional fast pitch matches denise lillee bowled sometimes quick but mainly he bowled very slow release. But somehow gained power momentum from kia. The batsmen infact had left their defence with incorrect stroke which then had many broken stumps.
Allan donald as i was discussing as the fastest bowler should be encrypted by a physics scientist. The run-up speed, the quicker momentum towards the crease, and the quick release. On a short pitch of calcutta just 16 metre and took just 0.63 milli seconds to reach the other end. A blinder for batsmen and was partially only visible in tv cameras when at wicketkeeper's gloves! So what could be the speed vector in km/hr ? I calculated the speed it says 91.6kmph and at 0.39 milli seconds it could be 147 kmph. So as far as calculations are concerned there is not much considerable difference in whether allan donald bowls at 91kmph or 147kmph!!!
In the speed gun it says 146 kmph! Shoaib akhtar and bret lee run-up is not that fast and need to adjust at the crease. Bret lee infact since his debut never gave any thrilling speedy performance like allan donald used to bowl.

P.S.- south africans seem like having rare warrior genes living in nature they seem to have adapted while watching cheetahs, rhinos etc. Like jonty rhodes fielding in hero cup seem like challenging the time frame seconds running, diving and catching athletism!

In my earlier fun practise days in cricket i used to bowl on cement pitch. So i had a lot of time to experiment watching as fast bowlers skill as on tv. Then for some months i had tried the skill of waqar younis which is similar to denise lillee that is stretching left leg at bowling stride such as it is parallel to the crease and foot like a mid karate sidekick . This bowling action like a clock spring winded to a potential and released a kinetic energy. So it was a good learning experience for me. Like the 1990-91 sharjah cup waqar younis took many sri lanka five wicket hauls!
But many a times due to lack of energy my deliveries used to sway flight to the wide corners of the net. And at the release, my left foot used to rotate at the crease with impact which used to give me a discerning pain in my knee. So i again checked bret lee bowling on tv and tried to leap from behind crease. Many bowlers do not try stretching the left leg stride but the leap is a trademark of fast bowling. Like bowling of shuan pollock, damien fleming, aquib javed or waqar younis of 1994!
This action then creates lesser pressure on the knee, shin and lessens the left leg stride. The faster the bowling the greater there is an impact of the left ankle digging at the crease! And the rest bowling speed is seen speeding at the turf! ESPN

In 1996 shoiab akhtar had singularly renegade rebel to become a fastest bowler in international scene. At a time which i think the fast bowling was dilapidating, and very few like shuan pollock, andrew fintoff were making a career. So i think that fast bowling over the years after 1996 years is like an illusion. The fastest bowlers like of pakistan other than shoaib akhtar, wasim akram, waqar younis..etc are just speeding to 60 kmph to 94 kmph, with one or two deliveries at speed 118 kmph!!! And the rest of the countries fast bowlers are below 88 kmph! So most of the bowlers in international cricket are very slow medium pacers!
Cause when calculating speed in milli seconds time every other fast bowlers can't bowl at 95 kmph nor even 130 kmph!!!!

I read about sachin tendulkar surprising that he wanted to become a fast bowler and tennis superstar in his childhood days!
And he even went to MRF pace academy in 1988 for training! So in some matches of his early cricket days sachin tendulkar used to bowl seamers medium pace, of bowling action somewhat similar to chetan sharma. And had even a leg stump yorker which always missed. But sometimes took wickets. Later he became a leggie!
Funny he was bowled by most of the fast bowlers mentioned.
Most coolest bowled were done by allan donald, shoaib akhtar, heath streak, franklin rose and shane o' connor.
And the world's most coolest bowled was of mark waugh in 1996 world cup when he was beaten by speed at all odds in milli seconds by Ian bishop.
