After dithering for long, Sachin finally decided to turn down Captaincy.
Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday turned down the offer to become the captain of India's Test cricket team just two days before his appointment was to be formally announced in Chandigarh.
However, it is too early to plump for Dhoni. There is still an element of doubt about his capabilities.
Kumble or VVS Laxman could be the compromise candidates.
I would go for VVS, because his career seems to follow the pattern of Venkatraghavan, who was Captain in one Test and the 12 th Man in the next.
i think its a good decision by tendulkar to tern down the offer he had two chances and hasn't been successful and he now 34 so its time for somebody younger to take take over i think dhoni is favorite to take over has test captain also

i don't think ganguly will get it it will be either dhoni or kumble or vvs laxman i think dhoni is not ready yet but kumble is 36(to old) and vss laxman is fighting for place so is yuvraj so dhoni looks logical choice
I agree that Dhoni is the logical choice... he wasn't ready for the ODI captaincy, either, but he still go it
I just remember the news reports of the riots in India, when Ganguly was sacked form the captaincy, & I know that he's got a very strong supporter base!

veteran leg-spinner Anil Kumble on Wednesday said he is ready to take over as India's next Test captain if selectors ask him to do so.
The 37-year-old leg-spinner, a veteran of 118 Test and 271 one day matches, said leading India would be an honour for him but it was up to the selectors to decide who they want for the top job.
"I would certainly do the job if asked to. I don't know what the big deal is, why so much is being made of this. I have said this before also," Kumble told Cricinfo.
Since Rahul Dravid quit the job after leading India to a successful tour of England, India have been without a Test captain and with Sachin Tendulkar - the selectors' first choice for the job - pulling out of the race, one day skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni seems to be leading a one-horse race.
"I don't know whether I'm in the race, but if it's offered it would be a great honour," said Kumble, who, many felt, could have been a good captain because of his cerebral approach to the game.
"I have relished it whenever I had the opportunity. But that's not something for me to decide," Kumble added.
Incidentally, cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has also advocated having Kumble as the captain of the Test team.
Though Dhoni seems almost certain to get the job, a number of former players, including Ravi Shastri, have warned that the youngster already has a lot on his plate and burdening him with the Test captaincy might backfire.

Protesting? I know that I wasn't there, & that I only say news footage, but people burning effigies, going on strike, & overturning cars..? It looked an awful lot like rioting to me.
For the record: Personally, Ganguly's sacking didn't bother me one little bit.
I regard him as a poor sportsman, & I believe that world cricket would be better off without him. He's bad example to young players... irrespective of the whether or not he's a good batsman.
