Talking India in West Indies, 2006

At last, at last! Never thought we’d win after those three deadly draws. But I notice that India has actually slipped down the ICC Test rankings table and is now in fourth place. How can that be?

Indiatalking, that is because when the series began, India were a whopping 39 points ahead of the Windies, which means you should win by a bigger margin than 1-0 to justify your ranking. If you notice, India have the same number of points as Pakistan, and are 22 places behind Australia!

That means if India and Australia play now, Australia has to win 2-0 or something. But that’s only in theory, because India next play a Test in South Africa, and going by current form, I don’t see much joy there.

Yeah, Sunny, cricket in RSA is all about pace bowlers, and Irfan Pathan & mates simply don’t have it in them, if they ever did.

Another interesting statistic from the ICC individual rankings table: Rahul Dravid remains in second place in the rankings for batsmen and is now just 10 points short of his best mark. Only Ricky Ponting is ahead of him. However, Dravid’s opposite number Brian Lara is in 10th spot, which is his lowest Test ranking in five years (he averaged just 26.37 this series).

I think India didn’t deserve to win in West Indies. They played poor cricket against a weak opposition.

He, he, Bouncer, they played better than the West Indians, which is what matters. The guys in the Windies squad are still too busy trying to figure out which island they come from to play as a united team. That is why Clive Lloyd was such a successful captain. He showed the guys what it meant to represent the West Indies as a nation.

I disagree on your first point, Koolnerve. The way Indian batsmen dealt with Lawson and Colleymore doesn’t hold out too much hope for the future.
