Default 'Newlands an embarassment'

The Newlands cricket ground in Cape Town won't receive a pass mark when official reports of last week's second test between South Africa and the West Indies are submitted.
The shocking condition of the outfield was a major talking point during the match that South Africa won in four days to square the series at 1-1.

There were many bare patches on the surface, and the sandy layer underneath made the outfield slow and heavy.

At least two players suffered injuries as a result of the conditions. South Africa's Neil McKenzie and Fidel Edwards of the West Indies were both injured while running in the outfield.

Comments about the outfield varied from "shocking" to "pathetic", adding up to an embarrassment for what is known as one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the world.
