New Zealand's selectors have sprung a surprise by calling up uncapped Northern Knights youngster Daniel Flynn for the second Twenty20 against England in Christchurch on Thursday.

Former New Zealand Under-19 captain Flynn will replace all-rounder Jacob Oram, who is left out as a precaution to rest a tight left hamstring.

Flynn, an attacking left-hand bat in the style of Oram, struck a career-best 149 for Northern against Canterbury Wizards in Christchurch in front of the Kiwi selectors just hours before his call-up.

New Zealand selection manager Sir Richard Hadlee said: "This is a great opportunity to introduce another exciting young player into the Black Caps squad.

"His innings today was at better than run-a-ball and as a left-hander he will fit beautifully into our middle order at number six or seven."

Oram is expected to return for Saturday's opening one-day international in Wellington.
