Captain Mahela Jayawardene revealed the 30-year-old's fitness is being monitored before a decision is made about his inclusion for the Hobart Test.

"If Kumar is 100 per cent fit, he'll bat at number three," Jayawardene said. "There are few options and one is that we could probably push Michael Vandort up the order.

"In that case, one of the openers will probably miss out. If the wicket is slow, then we can have some cover in the spin bowling department too.

"He's been running around and we need to assess things one more time. We don't want to take any risks with him with a series against England coming up.

"If he plays, given the fact that he's coming back from injury, he will not keep wicket as it will be too much of a strain for him."

Jayawardene is keen for his side to fight back from their humiliation in the first Test when the second encounter gets under way in Hobart.

Sri Lanka were thrashed by an innings and 40 runs in Brisbane and Jayawardene does not want to see his side capitulate again.

"In Nottingham [against England] and Wellington [against New Zealand] we showed a lot of character," he said. "We need to show what a good side we are and simply saying we are a good side alone won't do.

"We need to have belief in ourselves and we had a chat about that before starting training today. We are committed to winning. We just want to go flat out and make it happen."
