Default Who’s the better captain? Mahela or Marvan?

Watching the Sri Lankans demolish England over the summer, I was struck by the maturity that Mahela Jayawardene showed as a captain. In similar situations, Marvan Atapattu has sometimes seemed a little too passive. Would anyone out there say Mahela was a better choice as captain?

No, Rob. Marvan is still way ahead when it comes to keeping a cool head under pressure. Obvious aggression is not always the only way to play.

But Mahela himself has said he is more than happy to play under Marvan. I agree with that. I think it was Marvan who started the transformation of this team by creating an environment in which youngsters could thrive. He has to be allowed to continue the good work.

Knowing the cricket bosses in SL, I can tell you with near certainty that something will go wrong in the next two months. Either the board’s politics will resurface, or some honcho will fight with the coach, or something equally bad will happen. Remember, a lot of teams are just waiting to poach Moody.

But what is heartening about Sri Lanka’s future ODI campaigns is they are really experienced in the format and have fine-tuned a system for winning ODI matches!
