Coach Mickey Arthur praised batsman Hashim Amla, who led a South African fightback on a rain-hit third day of the fourth and final Test against England Africa at the Oval on Saturday.

Amla made 71 not out as South Africa reached 110 for two in their second innings, still 12 behind England's first innings total.

Only 17.5 overs were bowled Saturday before rain, which started falling before lunch, prevented any further play.

"We're right back in it," said Arthur. "We knew we had to bat well in the second innings and we are even stevens now. If we can string another or two partnerships together it could be quite a good Test match."

Arthur said Amla played a key role in the number three batting position.
