It was fitting that Andy Flower gave his press conference after the fourth Test in Barbados outside ballroom No 3 at the Hilton Hotel. It was there that Duncan Fletcher resigned his post as coach during the World Cup two years ago, a cathartic move at the time for him and the England team but one that has also proved to be a watershed. Not since Fletcher has the position been adequately or permanently tenanted, a void that Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, will spend the next month trying to fill.

Morris travels home as the one-day series begins but will not be heading off on holiday, for he has to sign off the shortlist for the job that Odgers Ray & Berndtson, the headhunters, will recommend. Then he will begin to set up the panel that will put the prospective candidates through their paces at interview. He hopes that, by the beginning of next month, a new man will be in place.
