His father Trevor Laughlin was a hard-hitting all-rounder, who represented Victoria with distinction during the 1970s, earning his call-up to the national line-up for three Tests and six one-day internationals during the World Series Cricket era.

Before yesterday, such lofty ambitions were beyond even the wildest dreams of Ben, 26, a quietly spoken carpenter who has only recently discovered his skills with a hammer and drill pale in comparison to those with the shiny white Kookaburra cricket ball.

"I didn't really play that much junior cricket and I have just plugged away at club level for the last couple of years," Laughlin said.

"I got the chance to play some Sheffield Shield at the end of last year. Then this year I got to play in all the one-dayers and it has turned out really well."
