India to play twenty-20 from 2007.
"We were outvoted 10-1 at the ICC meeting (in Dubai) earlier this year. Except us, every member was in favour of having the 20-20 world championship," BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told reporters after a working committee meeting in New Delhi.

I believe some corporates like Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and Videocon are already making bids to sponsor a 20-20 competition in India in April-May 2007. More money-spinning for the BCCI, though it appears to have been dragged in against its will.

Whew! What does this do to the cricket calendar? We’ll have the World Cup of the ‘old-fashioned’ ODI format in March-April, 2007, and the first ever 20-20 World Championship in South Africa in probably May-June 2007. So where will the esteemed BCCI squeeze in a domestic tournament?

I’m not sure 20-20 will be very well received in India. After all, it was invented in England, where people weren’t turning up to watch regular one-day matches and the need for a still shorter version of the game was felt. Does this compare to the Indian situation? Just look at the crowds thronging the ODI matches.
