NEW DELHI: The cricket World Cup trophy has been damaged while being displayed in India, a news report said Friday.
A gold ring below the area that recognizes previous winners broke from the wooden base of the trophy, which costs an estimated US$80,000 (€60,813.38), the Hindustan Times said.

The trophy was being displayed in the eastern city of Calcutta by LG, the South Korean electronics giant that is a global sponsor of the International Cricket Council.

The World Cup starts Tuesday in Jamaica with the West Indies hosting Pakistan and runs until April 28.
A news release from LG said that the gold ring had been separated from the base when they received the trophy and ICC rules do not allow anyone except the official trophy makers to polish or repair the prize, the paper added.

The report gave no other details and company officials were not reachable for comment. India last won the World Cup in 1983 and the World Cup final was held in Calcutta in 1987, when Australia won the first of its three titles.
