India suffered a setback two days before the start of the first Test against Pakistan when medium pacers Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and Rudra Pratap Singh were ruled out with injuries.
The Indian board said that Munaf Patel has been drafted into the squad.
The withdrawals mean India are left with experienced left-armer Zaheer Khan and Patel as pace bowlers plus three spinners for the opening Test starting in New Delhi on Thursday.
Sreesanth injured his bowling shoulder during Sunday's final one-dayer while left-arm RP Singh, who sat out that game, has an abdominal injury.
Both figured prominently alongside Khan during India's 1-0 Test series win in England earlier this year.
Patel, 24, is an accurate bowler who has played infrequently due to poor fitness. He broke down after two one-dayers in England in September but has since done well in domestic games.
Indian wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni, who twisted his ankle in Jaipur on Sunday, trained with the rest of the squad.
