The facts are these. Today England play Australia in the seventh international at Chester-le-Street, and fly to South Africa the following day, while the six other countries are currently finishing their preparations. The altitude of Johannesburg is 6,000 feet. Today England will prepare for their game by playing in the rarefied atmosphere of Riverside, 167 feet above sea level.

A strong and effective government would surely make sure that a governing body gives the national team the best chance to win. England have to play Sri Lanka on Friday, South Africa on Sunday and New Zealand on Tuesday, as cramming their games in quickly is their penalty for turning up late: a pretty gruelling fixture list for a fresh and acclimatised team, let alone England. All of them are day/nighters as well, and you can't just turn up and expect to catch skiers under floodlights at high altitude.
