ENGLAND cricket star Paul Collingwood is backing his home-town cricket club's bid to build a new pitch and pavilion.

The plans have caused a stir in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, where planners are advising councillors to turn them down.

But Collingwood, currently on tour in the West Indies with the England team, yesterday lent his support to the scheme.

He said: “The relocation and redevelopment of the clubhouse and playing area is vital if the club is to achieve its aims of improving facilities, expanding its membership and offering more opportunities for young boys and girls to play the game.
