IPL franchisees face probe heat

The Income Tax Department’s probe is spreading wider with three IPL franchisees already under the scanner.

Several IPL offices and agencies related to the mega Twenty20 event were already raided by IT sleuths over the last two days. The focus has now turned to the IPL teams with Kolkata and Chennai facing the heat.

The IT probe has now reached the offices of the Kolkata and Chennai teams and several documents related to Kolkata’s operations have reportedly been seized.

According to reports, the Deccan Chronicle's offices were raided by IT officers in Hyderabad. The Deccan Chronicle owns the Hyderabad IPL team.

Meanwhile, the Mohali team has been issued summons by a Chandigarh court over irregularities in filing annual returns.

Modi is accused of having stakes in several IPL teams and it seems more dirt is set to come out of the closet as the probe spreads across the board.

Several of the IPL boss's friends and relatives are said to be involved with a few franchisees, clearly a conflict of interests.

The murk is getting clearly deeper with an e-mail spat between Modi and BCCI President Shashank Manohar coming to the fore.

Modi had, in an earlier, e-mail appealed to all franchisees to reveal their sources of funding to which Manohar replied promptly, stating ‘these things’ should be discussed only in the Governing Council meeting of the IPL on Monday, April 26.
