A MATCH-winning performance by Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya gave the Mumbai Indians their first victory in the Indian Premier League.

Jayasuriya took 3-14, the best figures of the tournament so far, to help his side to a seven-wicket win over the high-flying Kolkata Knight Riders.

Jayasuriya's spell helped restrict the home side to 137, before Mumbai, led by Dwayne Bravo (64 from 53 balls), chased down the total with eight balls to spare.

Sri Lanka veteran Jayasuriya also hit 18 runs from 10 balls, took a catch and had a hand in running out Australia captain Ricky Ponting.

Ponting managed only 19 from 31 balls while his Kolkata teammate David Hussey scored 17 from 20 balls.
