The International Cricket Council has assured the Pakistan Cricket Board that the 2008 Champions Trophy would be held in Pakistan as scheduled from 10 September, the PCB chairman, Mr Nasim Ashraf, claimed today.
Mr Ashraf, back from a meeting with ICC officials, including the organisation's acting chief executive officer, Mr Dave Richardson, in Dubai, said security for the tournament would be planned by the hosts and the ICC.
Pakistan are to host the event for the first time but, in accordance with the ICC's regulations, a security delegation will visit the host country in June to give the final go-ahead. If the ICC delegation gives a negative report, the tournament may yet be shifted to Sri Lanka.
But, after June, once it is decided that Pakistan will host the tournament even if the conditions are bad, the tournament can only be cancelled or postponed but not shifted owing to logistical issues.
Mr Ashraf said the ICC security delegation was expected late in May.
