ROB Quiney was becoming accustomed to being Victoria's batting understudy.

Squeezed out of the Bushrangers' team on the eve of last year's Sheffield Shield final, against NSW, the 26-year-old's battle for a spot this season didn't get any easier when the team signed boom recruit Chris Rogers, fortifying a top six that also included Nick Jewell, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Cameron White and Andrew McDonald.

That was before Quiney became the beneficiary of a shoulder injury to prospective Test debutant — and Victorian teammate — Bryce McGain. With McGain sent home, Victorian captain White was rushed to India, leaving a temporary place for the left-hander at No. 6 for Victoria.
