I had to share these thoughts about my favourite player – VVS Laxman. As we all know, he was dropped from the ODI squad, as well as for the last two Tests against England in March 2006. He knew that if he didn’t do something big in the Caribbean, he would probably have to say goodbye to international cricket forever. But the question is, even after his 100 (his 10th Test century), is his place in the team finally safe?

It amazes me how VVS has to prove himself all the time. What Lara said is absolutely true, but can you imagine any other cricket-playing nation where a player of his calibre is always under scrutiny? I sometimes think India doesn’t deserve him.

Bhajji, I would simply quote Brian Lara: “Losing the middle order very early, he showed a lot of responsibility, and he’s a class player, as we all know. We found it hard to uproot him but then you have to expect these things from players like that. It was a special innings.”

As you know, Bhajji, we in Australia have always held Laxman in high regard. I remember what Steve Waugh told Brett Lee during Australia’s tour of India in 2004: “If you get Dravid it would be great, to get Tendulkar would be excellent, but to get Laxman would be a miracle!”
