India hit back late on to leave England on 229-5 at close of play on the first day of the first Test match in Chennai.

The tourists were well placed at 164-1 in their first innings at tea, but lost four wickets in the final session of the day to leave India slightly on top.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, England made a bright start as openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss put on a partnership of 117 for the first wicket.

Both left-handers passed 50, but Cook (52) perished soon after as he aimed a slog-sweep at Harbhajan Singh and lofted a top-edge to the waiting Zaheer Khan at mid-on.

Ian Bell made 17 before he was trapped leg before wicket by Zaheer, who was starting to gain some reverse swing and the left-arm quickie then made a crucial breakthrough in removing England captain Kevin Pietersen.
