When England's cricketers arrived in the Caribbean in January, they gave hardly a thought to the possibility of defeat in the scheduled four-Test series.

The comments from individuals in the England touring party suggested they were far more focused on the Ashes Series against the world's number one team Australia later in the Summer.

Those of us who have watched closely as the West Indies team made small steps forward in the last year suspected the English were in for a surprise or two. Few of us dared to believe the West Indies would actually win the series.

The collective delight now that Mr Christopher Gayle and his men have completed a 1-0 series win over England to reclaim the Wisden Trophy lost nine years ago, reflects the passion for cricket embedded in the Caribbean psyche and culture.
