Scotland captain Ryan Watson believes beating "favourites" Ireland in their opening match of the ICC World Cup Qualifier in South Africa on Wednesday will set them up nicely for the tournament.

The Scots come in to the 19-day competition as defending champions having beaten the Irish on their own turf in the final four years ago. However, much has changed since according to Watson, who believes the gap between cricket's associate members has been closed.

Speaking ahead of the opening game at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, Watson said: "Winning the first match in any competition is always important. I would say the Irish are probably favourites at the moment."
